Nicole's Grand Debut

I was born on June 26, 1987 to dancers, Sybil and Melvin Johnson. Detroit, MI is where I was born and raised before moving to Southfield (a suburb of Detroit) where I attended Southfield-Lathrup High School. This (in addition to Fem Fatale Dance Studio) is where I began to hone my talents as a serious dancer. I've been a student here at Western Michigan University for four years studying Dance and Public Relations.

While studying here at the university I've had many great experiences and opportunities. Through the department of dance I've worked with choreographers such as Dianne Macyntire, Robert Battle, and Doug Verone. I am also involved in the Orchesis Dance Society (a registered student organization for student choreography in the department), and Ebony Vision (a performance company and support network for minority dance majors on Western Michigan University's campus) through which
I have had many opportunities to perform before large audiences not only on campus, but around the community, and across the state as well. I was also a member of Western Dance Project (the performance company that represents the university) during the 2006-2007 academic year. Outside of the university, I have also danced in Velocity (a show at Greektown Casino in Detroit, MI) and on the Scream 5 and Screamfest 07' tours (a 25-city hip hip and R&B tour)

I am also the 1st Vice President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Delta Upsilon Chapter. This is a public service sorority pledged to making a difference on campus and in the community. It is currently the largest black Greek sorority in the world, with over 250,000 members focusing on scholarship, sisterhood, and service.

Upon graduating from WMU, I plan to move out of the state and pursue my dream of becoming a professional concert dancer for a contemporary/modern company. Until then, I plan to work as a public relations specialist to support my family (my daughter and me). I also plan to further my education by receiving my masters degree in dance, and eventually my doctorate as well, using these degrees to one day teach on a university level. I would also like to continue to give back to my community by initiating an institution for fine and performing arts in the inner-city of where ever I end up. This institution will be geared toward giving underprivileged students an opportunity to receive high quality training and mentoring from professionals willing to share their time and talent.

As for right now, I am completely focused on taking care of newest addition (2 month old Laila Sheree Johnson), completing my B.A., learning all that I can learn, and changing as many lives as possible while I do it...
